Since your dog has reached the geriatric age..It could be so many things. But those are definitely signs that she is fighting something. The vet is a good idea so they can run some bloodwork to see how her organs are functioning...a fecal examination would be good to be sure she doesn't have parasites.

Good Luck..I hope she feels better soon :)
References :
vet assistant

He really needs further tests by the vet to know what this is but the fact that the growth is 'liquidy' means that he may have had a bad infection and a cyst has formed at his throat which would have made eating very uncomfortable for him. The fact that he originally improved on an anti-biotic is a good sign of that too. (Thats my guess anyway)

He may also have a thyroid condition or this can be caused by some sort of auto-immune response ('inconclusive' results, cyst etc and GSD's can be prone to Auto-Immune Disease) BUT he really needs Mondays vet appointment to arrive and lots of further tests to be done before anyone here can guarantee anything. I'm still thinking bad infection/cyst though. Here's hoping thats all it is eh.

Good luck and I hope the lab results don't take too long to come in!

ADDED; remember that although losing so much weight is usually seen as very bad - a very bad infection takes a lot out of the body too and they will lose weight rapidly at times. Keep him on chicken and rice and feed very small amounts very often. Also, if he is moulting right now, he is also using more calories up and it takes a while for the body to 'regulate' itself...plus he's been ill.

Again, I hope this is whats wrong with your dog given the other options and wish him a speedy recovery! All the best for the vets tomorow.
References :
Have seen a dog with a bad infection, drooling, shaking, cysts, panting heavily from walking etc, rest, anti-biotics, less a cyst and a bland diet later - very healthy! I hope thats all your dog has too.

There are three glands in the throat area.

The thyroid, the saliva and the lymph glands.

I have had a very similar situation recently and the first biopsy ( sna) came back as a possible tumour, but luckily the lump responded to antibiotics well and it seems it was a huge abscess afterall. The second full biopsy confirmed this.

However, my dog did respond to AB's immediately.

I see no option here but to have a full biopsy which is what the vet will probably suggest next. When you say the vet performed tests... was he awake and did he just have a needle inserted into the lump. This would be a small needle or fine needle. A full biopsy requires a GA.

All the very best and I do so hope there is good news at the end of this, however, losing weight like he is does not sound hopeful although as said this could all be down to thyroid problems.

MamaBas is right. The internet is sometimes a bit too full of information and we start summising.
References :
It sounds a lot like hyperthyroid, although usually temperamental changes are also common with the condition. I would suggest having a full blood panel done if that wasn't part of the tests they performed earlier, as this could tell you a lot (especially if it is a thyroid condition).
References :
Experience - I have worked with dogs for many years and am currently taking pre-vet classes.
