Save China’s Tigers has embarked on an unprecedented scientific journey to rewild zoo-born South China Tigers so they can regain their abiltiies to survive in the wild. If we can succeed in rewilding and reintroduce them back to its former habitat, it will have profound implications and set scientific precedences for many other zoo animals in the future…..

We can only return captive tigers to the wild from second generation onwards. So it will take at least five to six years before Chinese Tigers can be returned home to the wild …..a cats behaviour depends on three factors: genetic embedding, individual learning, and tradition. For example, a cat is born to hunt. But if it lost its mother before it learns to hunt from her, it would not know how to hunt effectively and will perish in the wild without its mother as a coach. Some cats learn to hunt better than others, depending on their learning abilities.

Tigers must start their rewilding training when they are young. This is the stage where they are young enough to learn new things. In the wild, tigers learn everything, particularly how to hunt, from their mothers. But we do not have that luxury when we take them out of zoos. The South China tiger or South Chinese tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis), also known as the Chinese, Amoy, or Xiamen tiger, is a subspecies of tiger native to the forests of Southern China. The South China tiger is one of the smaller and it is the most critically endangered of any of the living tiger subspecies. Experts maintain that there are fewer than 20 of these tigers left in the wild, and warn that it might become extinct within the next decade. One was recently born in a reserve in South Africa in November 2007, the first to be born outside China….. As the Chinese usher in the lunar “Year of the Tiger”, animal conservationists are working to save endangered wild tigers by preventing killings and destruction of their natural habitat.

Yin Hong, deputy director of the State Forestry Administration, told Xinhua China must intensify its efforts to restore tiger habitats and clamp down on the trade in tiger products.

Yin said the government should boost spending on conservation projects and strictly monitor them, while also cooperating with international programs to protect tigers.

Statistics show that at the beginning of the 20th century, about 100,000 wild tigers of eight subspecies roamed the earth. But during the next seven decades, most of them were slain.

“Tigers were regarded a threat to mankind and property, and people shot tigers in recreational hunting and used the tiger’s skin and parts,” she said.

Worldwide, there are only about 3,200 tigers left in the wild, with 50 to 60 of them in China. And although China is believed to be the birthplace of the tiger, currently only four of the six subspecies exist in China….. http://english.cctv.com/20100217/102422.shtml

As Chinese people are embracing the arrival of the Year of Tiger on Saturday, zoologists are worried about the survival of South China Tigers as the endangered species are facing a serious problem of inbreeding.

No traces of the tigers have been found in the last decade, they said.

The number of captive South China tigers (Panthera tigris amoyenesis) rose to 92 in 2009 from 60 in 2007 but all the tigers were the offsprings of six wild South China tigers which were caught more than 40 years ago, said Deng Xuejian, a professor with the Department of Biology of Hunan Normal University, based in Changsha, capital of central China’s Hunan Province.

“The inbreeding may lead to genetic freaks, low survival rates and poor physical makeup,” Deng said…..
