PARVO
Parvo is very contagious and can stay in the ground/house for up to a year. Even if this dog is already gone, clean every thing with bleach. If you get another dog, make sure he’s had Parvo vaccines and booster shots before you bring him home. References : experience
I am sorry for your loss.
It could have been parvo. but if your dog had all the shots. Then he wouldn’t get parvo. It should have been something that he ate, may be during a walk, or when he was in the yard. My husband told me that his rottweiler ate a poisonous frog in their yard, few years ago, and he got very sick & died in few hours.
Dogs are very quick in putting something, that they find on the floor, in to their mouth & swallow it. They do, without you even seeing it. and if it has a lot of baterias, then they can get very sick & even die.
Again sorry for what happened to your dog. I have a dog & I know you are going through very hard time now. References :
PARVO.
It’s really bad. One of my dogs died from it. You would need to get it checked out ASAP! if it happened again. There is a high mortality rate but dogs can recover from it. References :

I’m so sorry.
Eating something that contained a lot of bacteria could have caused it, as could contact with parvovirus.
